This abstract work by Hilma af Klint features a central orb surrounded by zodiac symbols, rendered in a muted palette against a bright yellow background. The painting blends geometric forms with symbolic imagery.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She created a visual language of geometric shapes and symbolic forms, often exploring spiritual and philosophical themes. Her work remained largely unseen until decades after her death. 'The Dove, No. 12' presents a large, grey-white orb dominating a yellow background. A thin, lavender ring encircles the orb. At its centre, a smaller sphere contains figures in shades of red and gold. Around the composition's perimeter are four zodiac symbols: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, and Gemini. The painting's brushwork is visible, adding texture to the otherwise flat composition. The colour palette is restrained, with the yellow background providing a stark contrast to the muted tones of the central orb.
