A Romantic view of the Doge's Palace in Venice by Richard Parkes Bonington, painted circa 1827. This work captures the light and architecture of the Venetian waterfront with precise detail.
Richard Parkes Bonington painted this view of the Doge's Palace following his only visit to Venice in 1826. Although he died at the age of twenty-six, his work influenced both British and French landscape traditions. This composition shows the Palazzo Ducale from the Riva degli Schiavoni, looking towards the Piazzetta. The artist captures the specific light of the Venetian lagoon. He uses a pale palette to describe the Gothic architecture and the marble patterns on the palace walls. In the foreground, figures gather near the Ponte della Paglia. These small characters provide a sense of scale against the massive stone structures. The water of the canal reflects the sky, which occupies a large portion of the upper left quadrant. Bonington was known for his ability to combine the precision of architectural drawing with the fluid handling of paint. The masonry of the palace is rendered with attention to its repetitive arches and decorative quatrefoils. To the left, the Column of Saint Mark stands near the edge of the Bacino. The atmosphere is clear, suggesting a bright day in the Mediterranean. This painting is characteristic of the Romantic interest in historic European cities. Bonington avoided the heavy, dark tones common in earlier topographical views. Instead, he used light glazes to suggest the texture of stone and the movement of clouds. His technique bridged the gap between formal academic painting and the more spontaneous style of later nineteenth-century artists.
