Description
A woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer, "The Dispute in the Temple" portrays a biblical scene with the young Jesus debating with elders in Jerusalem. The composition is dense, with detailed figures and architecture.
This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the biblical scene of "The Dispute in the Temple", where the young Jesus engages in theological discussion with the elders in Jerusalem. Altdorfer, a significant figure of the German Renaissance, was known for his contributions to painting, engraving, and architecture. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School, which often featured expressive colour and an interest in natural subjects. The composition is characterised by its dense, almost claustrophobic, arrangement of figures within an arched interior. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a range of tonal values, giving depth and texture to the scene. The architecture, though somewhat simplified, provides a setting for the intellectual exchange taking place. The figures are rendered with attention to detail in their garments and expressions, capturing the intensity of the debate. The overall effect is one of scholarly engagement and the assertion of youthful wisdom.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
