A dramatic watercolour depicting the biblical destruction of the Egyptian army, featuring a blood-red sun and turbulent, crashing waves.
John Martin, a figure of the British Romantic period, possessed a singular vision for the sublime and the catastrophic. In this work, he depicts the biblical narrative of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, while the Egyptian army is overwhelmed by the returning waters. The composition is dominated by a low horizon line, which allows the sky to occupy the majority of the frame. Martin employs a dramatic, almost theatrical use of light, where a blood-red sun pierces through heavy, dark clouds to illuminate the churning sea below.
The scale of the natural elements dwarfs the human figures, a recurring theme in Martin's oeuvre. On the right, a small group of figures stands upon a rocky outcrop, observing the chaos. Their presence provides a sense of perspective, emphasising the sheer power of the waves as they crash against the shore. The artist uses a palette of deep browns, ochres, and stark whites to render the foam and the turbulent water, creating a sense of motion that feels both immediate and eternal.
Martin was known for his large-scale paintings of apocalyptic subjects, often translated into mezzotint prints for a wider audience. This watercolour demonstrates his technical ability to manage complex light effects and atmospheric depth. The work avoids the cluttered detail of some of his larger canvases, focusing instead on the raw energy of the sea and the ominous quality of the sky. It is a study in the tension between divine intervention and the indifference of the natural world, captured through the medium of watercolour with precision and control.
