A detailed 18th-century etching by Pieter de Hondt depicting the biblical destruction of Jerusalem by Babylonian forces.
This etching by Pieter de Hondt depicts the biblical account of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian commander Nebuzaradan, as recorded in the Second Book of Kings. The composition is dense with activity, capturing the chaotic aftermath of the siege. In the foreground, figures are shown in states of distress and conflict, while the mid-ground features soldiers carrying away the spoils of the temple, including sacred vessels. The background is dominated by the burning city, with flames engulfing the architecture and figures fleeing the ramparts.
De Hondt employs a dramatic, theatrical approach characteristic of the period. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of urgency and movement, drawing the eye across the various vignettes of suffering and plunder. The artist balances the large-scale destruction with individual human narratives, such as the fallen figures in the immediate foreground. The inclusion of multilingual text at the base of the print, providing the biblical reference and a summary of the event, reflects the educational and moralising function of such prints in the eighteenth century.
As a Dutch engraver, de Hondt demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin, creating varied textures for the stone walls, the smoke, and the metallic sheen of the looted temple items. The work serves as a record of how historical and religious narratives were interpreted through the lens of Baroque aesthetics, prioritising emotional impact and narrative clarity. This print is a fine example of the period's interest in classical and biblical history, rendered with a focus on the grim realities of ancient warfare.
