A dramatic 18th-century religious scene by Venetian painter Giulia Lama, capturing the final moments of Saint Anne through expressive light and shadow.
Giulia Lama, a Venetian painter active in the early 18th century, produced this work during a period when she gained recognition for her dramatic use of light and shadow. The composition depicts the final moments of Saint Anne, surrounded by figures who observe the transition with solemnity. Lama employs a tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, atmospheric background, drawing the viewer's attention to the central narrative of the dying saint.
The painting features a palette dominated by deep ochres, muted blues, and earthy reds, characteristic of the Venetian school of the time. The figures are rendered with expressive, somewhat elongated proportions, a stylistic choice that adds to the emotional weight of the scene. A young attendant and a seated figure provide a sense of human scale, while the presence of cherubic forms in the upper right corner introduces a spiritual dimension to the earthly event. The drapery is handled with fluid, confident brushwork, creating a sense of movement within the stillness of the deathbed scene.
Lama remains an interesting figure in art history, having worked in a male-dominated environment in Venice. Her ability to handle complex multi-figure compositions with such dramatic lighting demonstrates her technical skill. This print captures the texture of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the specific quality of the light that defines the work. It is a representative example of 18th-century religious art, focusing on the human experience of a sacred narrative.
