Johannes Wierix, a member of the prolific Wierix family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the fine lines and controlled hatching characteristic of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking. The composition follows the narrative sequence found in the Second Book of Samuel, chapter eighteen, where Joab discovers Absalom suspended and proceeds to strike him with spears.

The scene is organised with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background, typical of the period's approach to narrative illustration. In the foreground, the central figure of Absalom is positioned against the trunk of the tree, his arms raised in a gesture of helplessness. To the left, mounted soldiers approach, while the background reveals a sprawling battlefield with a distant city, providing a sense of scale to the conflict.
