A sombre and realistic interpretation of a traditional religious subject, painted by Edouard Manet in 1864.
Edouard Manet completed The Dead Christ with Angels in 1864, submitting it to the Paris Salon of the same year. The composition draws heavily from the traditions of the Old Masters, specifically referencing the works of Velázquez and Titian. Manet presents a stark, unflinching depiction of the body of Christ, seated upright and supported by two angels. The figure of Christ lacks the idealised, divine perfection often found in religious art of the period. Instead, Manet focuses on the physical reality of the human form, rendered with a sombre palette and dramatic lighting that emphasises the pallor of the skin against the dark, indistinct background. The inclusion of the angels, with their distinct blue and red garments, provides a chromatic contrast to the muted tones of the central figure. At the base of the composition, a skull and a snake are positioned on the ground, traditional symbols of mortality and the triumph over sin. The painting received a mixed reception from contemporary critics, who were unsettled by the lack of traditional devotional sentiment and the raw, almost clinical approach to the subject matter. Manet’s technique here demonstrates his transition from the influence of Spanish masters toward the more modern, painterly style that would define his later career. The work remains a significant example of how nineteenth-century artists reinterpreted classical religious themes through a lens of contemporary realism, prioritising the material presence of the subject over conventional spiritual iconography.
