Annibale Carracci, a central figure in the development of the Baroque style in Rome, produced this work during the early seventeenth century. The painting depicts the body of Christ after the crucifixion, positioned in a foreshortened view that draws the viewer into the immediate physical reality of the scene. The composition is stark, focusing on the pallor of the skin and the physical trauma of the wounds, which are rendered with anatomical precision.

Carracci employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, where deep shadows contrast against the illuminated form of the body. This technique directs attention to the central figure while obscuring the background, creating a sense of quiet, sombre isolation. The inclusion of the crown of thorns, the nails, and the pincers in the foreground serves as a direct reference to the instruments of the Passion, grounding the spiritual narrative in tangible, material objects.
