A Ming Dynasty ink and colour painting on silk depicting the Daoist Immortal Han Xiangzi playing a flute.
This work by Liu Jun depicts Han Xiangzi, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythology. The figure is shown in a characteristic pose, playing a transverse flute while walking. Liu Jun, a court painter during the Ming Dynasty, demonstrates a mastery of line and form typical of the period. The artist employs fine, controlled brushwork to define the facial features and the texture of the garments, which appear to be made of straw or coarse fibres.
The composition is balanced, with the figure of the immortal occupying the centre of the frame. The background is minimal, suggesting a misty or ethereal environment that aligns with the Daoist theme of transcendence. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and aged silk, contributes to the sense of antiquity and spiritual focus.
