This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicts the courtesan Emu, associated with the Matsuya brothel, dressed in the costume of a cormorant fisherwoman. The work belongs to the series titled A Costume Parade in the Shimanouchi District (Shimanouchi nerimono), which documented the elaborate processions held in the pleasure quarters of Osaka. Hokuei, a prominent figure in the Kamigata print tradition, captures the theatricality of the event through the subject's pose and attire.

The figure holds a torch aloft, a tool used in traditional cormorant fishing to attract fish to the water's surface. Her costume is a stylised interpretation of the fisher's gear, featuring a wide-brimmed hat and layered garments with distinct patterns. At her feet, a cormorant swims in a small, stylised patch of water, rendered with traditional wave motifs. The composition includes a vertical cartouche containing the title and a fan-shaped graphic, which provides context for the specific parade entry.

Hokuei's approach to the figure is characteristic of the Osaka school, which often focused on the specific features of kabuki actors or famous courtesans participating in public displays. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the heavy outer garment and the texture of the straw-like skirt. The colour palette remains balanced, utilising muted earth tones for the clothing, contrasted by the deep blue of the water and the red accents on the sleeves and fan. This print offers a glimpse into the social life of the Shimanouchi district during the early nineteenth century, where the boundaries between professional performance and public spectacle were frequently blurred.
