A masterpiece of Persian miniature painting, this work depicts the legendary King Gayumars surrounded by his court in a lush, mountainous setting.
The Court of Gayumars is a celebrated masterpiece of the Safavid period, originally commissioned for the Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp. Sultan Muhammad, a master of the Tabriz workshop, depicts the legendary first king of Persia, Gayumars, enthroned upon a mountain peak. The composition radiates from this central figure, with his court gathered in a semi-circular arrangement below him.
The visual language employed here is characteristic of the high Safavid style. The figures are integrated into a rocky, vertical environment, where the crags and flora are rendered with extreme precision. The palette includes lapis lazuli, malachite, and gold leaf, applied with a level of control that allows for the depiction of minute details, such as the patterns on the garments and the individual leaves on the trees. The scene avoids traditional linear perspective, opting instead for a vertical stacking of elements that creates a sense of cosmic order.
Gayumars is shown surrounded by his family and courtiers, including his son Siyamak and grandson Hushang. The figures are dressed in leopard skins, a detail derived from the epic poem to signify the primitive yet noble state of humanity during this mythical era. The surrounding rocks are populated with hidden faces and animal forms, a technique often used by Persian miniaturists to reward the viewer for closer inspection. The work is framed by calligraphic panels containing verses from the Shahnameh, which provide the narrative context for the visual scene. This print captures the technical mastery of the original manuscript, preserving the delicate balance between the natural world and the courtly life depicted by Sultan Muhammad.
