Description
A striking 1966 composition by Richard Lindner, featuring two figures rendered in a rigid, mechanical style with bold, synthetic colours.
Richard Lindner, a German-born artist who relocated to the United States, developed a distinct visual language that merged European modernism with the visual culture of mid-century America. In this work, the artist presents two figures in profile, separated by a stark vertical division of colour. The background shifts from a bright yellow on the left to a deep black on the right, creating a theatrical environment for the subjects. The figures themselves are constructed with mechanical precision. Their forms are composed of flat, geometric planes and hard edges, reminiscent of both early twentieth-century constructivism and the stylised aesthetics of urban advertising. The female figure wears a mask-like headpiece, while the male figure is depicted with a cigarette, the smoke rendered in a ghostly, ethereal green. These elements suggest a preoccupation with the artificiality of human interaction in a modern, industrialised society. Lindner often explored themes of power, sexuality, and the urban experience. His subjects frequently appear as mannequins or dolls, stripped of organic softness and replaced by rigid, colourful segments. The palette is intentionally synthetic, utilising high-contrast hues that push the figures toward the foreground. By flattening the space and emphasising the graphic quality of the composition, Lindner invites the viewer to observe the subjects as objects of design rather than traditional portraits. This approach reflects the artist's background in commercial illustration, where clarity and impact were paramount. The work remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise the anxieties of the machine age with the bold, graphic sensibilities of the 1960s.
