A hand-coloured engraving by Johannes Wierix depicting the biblical scene of Absalom receiving counsel from Ahithophel and Hushai.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johannes Wierix depicts a narrative scene from the Second Book of Samuel. The composition centres on Absalom, seated in a throne-like chair, surrounded by his advisors. The figures of Ahithophel and Hushai are presented in a tense exchange, reflecting the political intrigue described in the biblical text. Wierix, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision through the fine lines and structured arrangement of the figures. The scene is set within an architectural framework, with classical columns and a distant view of a building, typical of the period's interest in perspective and classical motifs.
The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, provides a clear distinction between the garments of the various figures. The palette includes muted tones of blue, red, and green, which define the forms against the architectural background. The engraving captures a specific moment of deliberation, with the figures gesturing to convey the urgency of the situation. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, referencing the biblical passage where the counsel of Ahithophel is countered by Hushai. This work is representative of the high level of craftsmanship found in late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, where religious and historical subjects were frequently produced for a learned audience. The attention to detail in the armour, drapery, and facial expressions reflects the artist's ability to manage complex narrative scenes within a relatively small format. This print serves as an example of how biblical stories were visualised for contemporary viewers, combining technical skill with theological narrative.
