Purcell, an Irish engraver active in London, produced this work after a painting by the Dutch Golden Age master Gabriel Metsu. The print depicts a young woman in a kitchen setting, engaged in the preparation of game. She holds a spit with a small bird, while a hare hangs from a hook in the background. The composition is framed by a stone archway, a common device in Dutch genre scenes of the period to create a sense of depth and domestic intimacy.

Mezzotint was a preferred method for reproducing oil paintings because it allowed for subtle gradations of tone, capturing the soft light and textures of the original canvas.
