A detailed pen and wash drawing depicting the classical story of the Continence of Scipio, rendered in the style of the Dutch Golden Age.
This drawing depicts the classical narrative of the Continence of Scipio, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Philip Tidemann captures the moment Scipio Africanus returns a captive bride to her betrothed, Allucius, while simultaneously gifting the ransom money provided by her parents to the couple as a wedding present. The composition is arranged with theatrical precision, typical of late seventeenth-century history painting. Scipio stands as the central authority figure, his posture conveying noble restraint. The kneeling figure of the bridegroom and the standing bride form a triangle of emotional exchange, framed by the surrounding soldiers and attendants.
Tidemann employs a technique of pen and ink combined with grey wash to define the forms and create a sense of depth. The wash provides subtle modelling to the drapery and the armour of the soldiers, while the ink lines delineate the figures and the architectural setting of the tent. The inclusion of an inscription at the base of the sheet clarifies the narrative, a common practice for preparatory drawings or finished works intended for collectors. The work reflects the period's interest in moralising classical themes, where the virtues of self-control and generosity are presented for the viewer's contemplation. The artist's handling of the figures demonstrates a command of anatomy and expression, characteristic of his training and professional output in Amsterdam. This print offers a clear view of the draughtsmanship involved in constructing complex multi-figure scenes during this era, providing a window into the academic approach to historical storytelling.
