A dynamic coastal scene by Maxime Maufra, depicting the rugged cliffs and turbulent waters of the Breton shoreline in 1905.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, produced this study of the Breton coastline in 1905. The work captures the rugged geography of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, where the steep, verdant cliffs meet the turbulent waters of the English Channel. Maufra employs a vigorous application of paint, using thick, directional brushstrokes to convey the kinetic energy of the crashing surf and the solid mass of the rock formations.
The composition is anchored by the dark, imposing boulder in the foreground, which provides a sense of scale against the expansive sea. Maufra balances the composition by contrasting the bright, grassy slopes on the left with the deep, shadowed blues and teals of the water. His approach to colour is direct, favouring high-contrast tones that define the physical presence of the terrain rather than atmospheric softness. The sky is rendered with short, rhythmic marks that suggest a breezy, unsettled day on the coast.
Unlike his contemporaries who often sought to dissolve form into light, Maufra maintains a structural clarity in his depiction of the French coast. The painting reflects his deep familiarity with the region, a subject he returned to throughout his career. By focusing on the raw, unrefined elements of the shoreline, he provides a clear observation of the natural environment. This print captures the texture of the original oil application, preserving the physical character of the brushwork and the specific tonal shifts across the water and cliffside.
