A detailed Mannerist study of The Circumcision, rendered in pen, ink, and wash by the Bolognese artist Giovanni Francesco Bezzi.
This drawing by Giovanni Francesco Bezzi, also known as Nosadella, captures the narrative of the Circumcision. The composition is typical of the Mannerist period, prioritising complex figure arrangements and a sense of crowded activity around a central event. Bezzi, a pupil of Pellegrino Tibaldi, demonstrates his command of the human form through fluid, expressive lines and the application of wash to define volume and shadow.
The scene is packed with figures, their poses varied and dynamic. The central action takes place at an altar, where the infant is held. Surrounding the main participants are various onlookers, their expressions and gestures contributing to the sense of urgency and solemnity. The artist uses pen and brown ink to establish the contours, while the brown wash provides depth and tonal variation across the paper surface. The drawing displays the characteristic elongation of figures and the slightly agitated energy often associated with the Emilian school of the mid-sixteenth century.
Bezzi was active in Bologna, and his work reflects the influence of the Roman school, particularly the style of Parmigianino and Tibaldi. This study serves as a clear example of the preparatory process for larger religious commissions, where the artist would explore the spatial relationships between multiple figures before committing to a final painting. The visible chalk under-drawing and the confident ink strokes reveal the artist's working method, showing how he built the composition from initial sketches to more defined forms. The work remains a study of human interaction and religious devotion, rendered with the technical skill expected of a master draughtsman of the Italian Renaissance.
