A fine etching and engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi, reproducing Guercino's religious scene of the Circumcision of Christ.
This fine art print is an etching and engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi, a master of the stipple and line engraving techniques. The work reproduces a painting by the Baroque artist Guercino, which is located in the Church of the Nome di Gesù e Maria in Bologna. Bartolozzi, who spent much of his career in London, was highly regarded for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the precise medium of printmaking.
The composition depicts the biblical scene of the Circumcision of Christ. The infant Jesus rests upon a table, while a priest performs the rite. To the left, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph observe the event with solemnity. The figures are framed by classical architectural elements, including a large arch and a sturdy column, which provide a sense of spatial depth. In the background, a distant fortress sits atop a hill, adding a narrative layer to the setting. Several attendants gather around the central action, their expressions and postures contributing to the quiet gravity of the moment.
Bartolozzi employs a sophisticated range of line work to define the drapery of the garments, the texture of the stone, and the soft features of the figures. The light source appears to emanate from the infant, casting a gentle glow on those nearby. This print demonstrates the technical precision that defined Bartolozzi's output during his time in England, where he became a founding member of the Royal Academy. The inscription at the base of the print confirms its origin as a reproduction of the Guercino painting in Bologna. This piece offers a clear view into the 18th-century practice of disseminating Italian Baroque imagery through high-quality print media, making it a valuable example of historical reproductive engraving.
