A luminous depiction of the French village of Labastide, rendered in Henri Martin's signature Divisionist style of rhythmic, short brushstrokes.
Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, developed a distinct style characterised by the application of small, rhythmic brushstrokes. This technique, often referred to as Divisionism or Neo-Impressionism, involves placing individual touches of colour side by side on the canvas. The viewer's eye then blends these marks at a distance, creating a sense of luminosity and movement that differs from traditional blending methods.
In this depiction of the church at Labastide, Martin captures the rural character of the French countryside. The composition is structured around the verticality of the church spire and the surrounding poplars, which draw the eye upward against the rolling hills in the background. The foreground features agricultural plots, rendered with a variety of greens, ochres, and earthy tones that suggest the texture of cultivated soil and vegetation. A small stream winds through the scene, providing a cooling contrast to the warm hues of the hillsides.
Martin spent much of his career in the south of France, particularly in the Lot region, where he found inspiration in the light and the quietude of village life. His approach to painting avoids the rigid scientific application of colour theory found in the works of Georges Seurat. Instead, Martin utilised his brushwork to convey a personal, atmospheric response to the environment. The resulting image possesses a tactile quality, where the surface of the canvas appears to vibrate with light. This work reflects his interest in the interplay between human architecture and the natural world, documenting a specific location with a focus on the sensory experience of the scene rather than mere topographical accuracy.
