A traditional sumi-e ink painting by Kano Kōya, depicting the poet Pan Lang on a donkey with accompanying calligraphy.
This hanging scroll depicts the legendary Chinese poet Pan Lang, a figure often associated with the Song dynasty, riding a donkey. Kano Kōya, a member of the Kano school of painters, employs the traditional sumi-e technique, using monochromatic ink washes to define the subject. The composition is sparse, focusing on the silhouette of the poet and his mount against the negative space of the paper. The artist uses calligraphic brushwork to suggest the movement of the donkey and the posture of the rider, who appears deep in contemplation.
The upper portion of the scroll features a poetic inscription, a common practice in East Asian ink painting where text and image share a symbiotic relationship. The calligraphy provides context for the visual scene, linking the act of travel to the creative process of poetry. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, diluted greys, creating a sense of volume and texture despite the economy of the brushstrokes. The paper itself, aged to a warm, muted tone, provides a neutral ground that allows the ink to remain the primary focus.
Kano Kōya was active during the Edo period, a time when the Kano school maintained its status as the official painters for the shogunate. Works of this nature were frequently produced for the scholar-official class, reflecting an appreciation for Zen-influenced aesthetics and the idealised life of the recluse or poet. The simplicity of the imagery is intentional, designed to evoke a specific mood rather than provide a literal representation. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs the viewer to the essence of the subject, capturing a fleeting moment of travel through the mountains. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the character of the brushwork and the balance between the written word and the painted form.
