Description
A monumental 1647 oil painting by Paulus Potter, depicting a life-sized bull alongside other livestock and a herdsman in a Dutch pasture.
The Bull, painted in 1647, is a monumental work by the Dutch Golden Age artist Paulus Potter. Measuring nearly three metres in height, the canvas presents a life-sized depiction of a bull, which was an unusual choice for a painting of this scale during the seventeenth century. Potter focuses on the physical characteristics of the animal, capturing the texture of its hide, the weight of its frame, and the specific details of its anatomy with precision. Beside the bull, a cow rests on the ground, accompanied by a ram, a ewe, and a lamb. To the left, a herdsman leans against a tree, observing the scene. The background features a flat Dutch pasture under a heavy, cloud-filled sky, which adds a sense of atmospheric depth to the composition. A bird is visible in the upper right, while smaller livestock graze in the distant fields, providing a sense of scale and perspective. Potter was known for his dedication to animal studies, often sketching from life in the fields. This painting demonstrates his ability to combine scientific observation with traditional composition. The work is held in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. It remains a primary example of Dutch animalier painting, reflecting the period's interest in the natural world and rural life. The lighting is carefully managed to draw attention to the bull, which occupies the centre of the frame, while the surrounding elements provide context and balance. The painting is a study of form and texture, executed with a level of detail that was highly regarded by contemporaries and later collectors alike.
