A detailed maritime painting depicting the 1816 naval bombardment of Algiers by a combined British and Dutch fleet.
This painting depicts the naval engagement of 27 August 1816, when a combined British and Dutch fleet attacked the port of Algiers. The mission aimed to suppress the slave trade and secure the release of European captives. Gerardus Laurentius Keultjes captures the scale of the conflict, focusing on the tactical arrangement of the ships within the harbour. The composition is dominated by the dense, billowing smoke from the cannon fire, which obscures parts of the city and creates a dramatic contrast against the sky.
Keultjes employs a traditional maritime perspective, placing the viewer at a distance to observe the entire fleet. The ships are rendered with technical precision, reflecting the artist's interest in naval architecture and the mechanics of 19th-century warfare. The palette is muted, dominated by greys, browns, and the soft light of the horizon, which serves to emphasise the intensity of the smoke and fire. The sea is depicted with subtle movement, providing a stable base for the chaotic activity occurring above the waterline. The city of Algiers is visible in the background, caught between the sea and the hills, appearing as a secondary element to the naval action.
As a work of historical documentation, the painting provides a clear view of the naval tactics employed during the Napoleonic era. The artist balances the technical requirements of a naval record with the atmospheric demands of the scene. The clouds of smoke act as a framing device, drawing the eye across the breadth of the harbour and towards the ships engaged in the thick of the battle. This piece offers a view into the maritime history of the early 19th century, documenting a specific event that had significant consequences for Mediterranean naval power.
