A surrealist composition by Sabin Balasa featuring a luminous, translucent figure standing by a boat at the water's edge.
Sabin Balasa, a prominent figure in Romanian contemporary art, developed a distinct visual language often characterised by ethereal figures and cosmic themes. In this work, the artist presents a central, translucent human form standing at the edge of a body of water. The figure is rendered with a luminous, glowing outline, suggesting a spectral or metaphysical presence rather than a physical one. A small, dark boat sits near the shore, positioned between the figure and the water, evoking themes of transition and the passage of time.
The composition relies on a stark contrast between the cool, blue tones of the water and the night sky, and the warm, textured rock formations in the foreground. The rocks are depicted with a porous, almost cellular quality, providing a grounded, tactile counterpoint to the weightless, semi-transparent nature of the boatman. A circular, moon-like orb is placed within the chest of the figure, acting as a light source that reinforces the otherworldly atmosphere of the scene.
Balasa often explored human existence through a lens of myth and allegory. His technique involves smooth, blended brushwork for the atmospheric elements, contrasted with more deliberate, textured applications for the geological features. The absence of a horizon line creates a sense of infinite space, drawing the viewer into a contemplative, quiet environment. This piece captures the characteristic Balasa style, where the boundaries between reality and dream are blurred, inviting an interpretation of the figure as a guardian or a traveller between states of being. The work remains a clear example of his interest in the intersection of human identity and the vast, mysterious forces of the universe, rendered with a focus on light and symbolic form.
