This work reflects the group's interest in Synthetism, a style that prioritised the artist's subjective vision over the objective representation of nature. Sérusier, influenced by his mentor Paul Gauguin, utilised flat areas of colour and bold outlines to construct the composition. The painting depicts a rural scene through a non-naturalistic lens. The trees are rendered in shades of yellow, contrasting sharply against the deep blue and violet tones of the valley floor. The horizon line is high, compressing the space and creating a decorative effect. The sky is a muted, pale tone, which allows the stronger colours of the trees and ground to dominate the viewer's attention.
