A detailed etching by Samuel Palmer depicting a moonlit village scene inspired by the poetry of John Milton.
The Bellman is a late etching by Samuel Palmer, based on a tempera painting he produced in 1864. The composition draws inspiration from John Milton's poem, Il Penseroso, specifically the lines describing the bellman who walks his rounds by night. Palmer depicts a quiet English village under the glow of a full moon, with the bellman walking along a path as the inhabitants gather in the shadows of their cottages. Palmer employs a dense network of lines to create a sense of atmosphere and texture. The sky is filled with swirling, cloud-like forms, while the foliage and thatched roofs are rendered with meticulous cross-hatching. This technique allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the foreground shadows to the luminous white of the moon. The scene is quiet and contemplative, capturing a sense of rural life that feels removed from the industrialisation of the nineteenth century. This work belongs to the final phase of Palmer's career, during which he returned to the visionary themes of his youth in Shoreham. While his earlier works were often more experimental in their use of colour and form, this etching demonstrates a high level of technical control and precision. The composition is balanced, with the village structures providing a stable frame for the movement of the bellman. The presence of the cattle in the foreground adds a sense of scale and grounding to the scene. As a print, it demonstrates Palmer's mastery of the etching needle, showing how he could manipulate light and shadow to evoke a specific mood. It remains a representative example of his late-period focus on the poetic potential of the English countryside.
