The Bellman is a late etching by Samuel Palmer, based on a tempera painting he produced in 1864. The composition draws inspiration from John Milton's poem, Il Penseroso, specifically the lines describing the bellman who walks his rounds by night. Palmer depicts a quiet English village under the glow of a full moon, with the bellman walking along a path as the inhabitants gather in the shadows of their cottages. Palmer employs a dense network of lines to create a sense of atmosphere and texture. The sky is filled with swirling, cloud-like forms, while the foliage and thatched roofs are rendered with meticulous cross-hatching. This technique allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the foreground shadows to the luminous white of the moon.
