A 1568 oil painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, depicting five figures with physical disabilities in a courtyard setting.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted The Beggars in 1568, a year before his death. The work depicts five figures with physical disabilities, moving through a courtyard near a brick wall. Each figure wears a distinct hat, including a paper crown and a metal basin, which may carry symbolic meanings related to social hierarchies or the mockery of authority during the period of Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The figures rely on wooden crutches to navigate the uneven ground.
Bruegel employs a muted palette, dominated by earthy browns, greys, and soft greens. The composition focuses on the physical struggle of the subjects, rendered with a directness that avoids sentimentality. The artist captures the textures of their clothing, which includes animal skins and worn fabrics, with precise brushwork. A sixth figure stands in the background, partially obscured, holding a bowl, which adds a sense of depth to the scene.
This painting is housed in the Louvre Museum. It reflects the artist's interest in the lives of ordinary people and those on the margins of society. Bruegel often used such subjects to comment on human folly or the precarious nature of existence. The work remains a notable example of his late style, where he moved away from the crowded, panoramic compositions of his earlier career toward more focused, character-driven studies. The inclusion of the date and signature in the lower left corner confirms its provenance and place within his final body of work.
