A serene oil painting of the Auray River by French Post-Impressionist Maxime Maufra, capturing the atmospheric light and natural textures of the Breton countryside.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, produced this depiction of the Auray River in Brittany. The work captures the quiet atmosphere of the French countryside through a focus on light and atmospheric conditions. Maufra employs a technique characterised by visible, rhythmic brushwork that builds the texture of the foliage and the reflective surface of the water. The composition balances the verticality of the trees against the horizontal flow of the river, creating a sense of calm observation.
His approach to colour relies on a palette of earth tones, greens, and muted blues, which reflects the specific light of the Breton region. Unlike the more rigid structures of earlier academic painting, Maufra allows the paint to suggest form rather than define it with precise outlines. The trees on the right side of the frame provide a dense, shadowed mass that contrasts with the lighter, more open areas of the riverbank and sky. This interplay of light and shadow is a hallmark of his practice, which sought to record the immediate visual experience of a location.
Throughout his career, Maufra maintained a connection to the natural world, often returning to the coastal and riverine environments of Brittany. This piece demonstrates his ability to translate the physical reality of the river into a painterly surface. The application of paint is deliberate, with thicker impasto used to catch the light on the leaves and the water. The result is a work that conveys the specific mood of a day by the river, prioritising the sensory qualities of the scene over narrative detail. It remains a representative example of his interest in the shifting appearances of the French terrain.
