A satirical 1557 engraving by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, critiquing the futility of attempting to educate the foolish.
This engraving, published by Hieronymus Cock in 1557, presents a satirical view of education and human folly. The composition centres on a schoolmaster, who is surrounded by a chaotic group of students. The central figure is an ass, positioned near the top left, which serves as a visual metaphor for the foolishness of those who believe that travel or formal instruction can transform an inherently dull mind into a wise one. The Latin and Dutch inscription at the base translates to the idea that if one sends a donkey to Paris to learn, it will return as an ass rather than a horse.
Bruegel employs a crowded, busy composition to convey the disorder of the classroom. Students are depicted in various states of distraction, some reading, others playing, and one even hiding inside a wicker basket. The figures are rendered with the characteristic physical types associated with Bruegel, featuring rounded forms and expressive, often grotesque, facial features. The use of line is precise and descriptive, typical of the high-quality printmaking produced in Antwerp during the mid-sixteenth century.
Beyond the humour, the work functions as a critique of contemporary pedagogical methods and the vanity of academic pretension. The inclusion of specific details, such as the alphabet charts and the various domestic objects scattered across the floor, adds a layer of narrative realism to the scene. This print is a significant example of the moralising themes that occupied Bruegel throughout his career, demonstrating his ability to blend observation of daily life with philosophical commentary. The print remains a clear window into the intellectual climate of the Low Countries, where proverbs and folk wisdom were frequently utilised to examine the complexities of human behaviour.
