A detailed etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a group of artists sketching during their travels through the Bavarian Alps in 1818.
This etching by Johann Adam Klein captures a moment of camaraderie among travelling artists. Created in 1819, the work documents a journey the artist undertook from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden in August 1818. The scene depicts four figures in the open air, equipped with the tools of their trade. One artist sits and sketches, while his companions stand nearby, one holding a large parasol to shield the group from the sun. Their attire, including cloaks, hats, and heavy rucksacks, reflects the practical requirements of nineteenth-century travel.
Klein demonstrates a precise approach to line work, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of clothing and the rugged terrain of the Alpine background. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a naturalistic grouping that suggests a pause during a long walk. The inclusion of a church spire and mountainous peaks in the distance provides a sense of place, grounding the figures in the Bavarian landscape. The inscription at the bottom, 'Meinen Reisegefährten gewidmet' (Dedicated to my travelling companions), confirms the personal nature of the work. It serves as a visual record of the artistic practice of the period, where sketching directly from nature was a common pursuit for painters and printmakers alike. The attention to detail in the equipment, such as the portfolio cases and walking sticks, offers a glimpse into the life of a travelling artist in the early nineteenth century. This print is a fine example of Klein's ability to combine technical skill with a narrative quality, capturing the spirit of exploration and artistic observation.
