Description
A detailed 17th-century gallery painting by David Teniers the Younger depicting Archduke Leopold Wilhelm among his vast collection of Italian masterpieces in Brussels.
David Teniers the Younger produced several versions of this composition to document the extensive art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. As the court painter and curator in Brussels, Teniers managed a collection that included hundreds of Italian masterpieces. This painting is a visual inventory of the Archduke's acquisitions, many of which were purchased from the estate of the Duke of Hamilton and King Charles I of England.
The scene depicts the Archduke standing in the centre of a large hall, surrounded by his courtiers and Teniers. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with framed canvases, primarily by Venetian masters such as Titian, Giorgione, and Veronese. Teniers includes himself in the composition, standing near a table of sculptures and holding a drawing. Two small dogs occupy the foreground, adding a sense of domesticity to the formal setting.
The perspective is arranged to give a sense of the scale of the gallery. Each miniature reproduction within the painting is rendered with enough detail to identify the original work. This specific version is part of a series intended to promote the Archduke's status as a sophisticated patron of the arts. The use of light from the left side of the room defines the textures of the wooden floor and the gilded frames.
