A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Gabriel Metsu, depicting a woman peeling apples in a quiet, domestic interior.
Gabriel Metsu, a Leiden-born painter active during the Dutch Golden Age, produced this work during a period when genre scenes of domestic life gained popularity among the middle class. The painting depicts a woman engaged in the mundane task of peeling an apple, a subject that allows for the careful observation of texture and light characteristic of the era. Her focused expression and the quiet interior setting reflect the values of domesticity and industry often explored by Dutch masters.
The composition is anchored by the figure of the woman, whose red bodice and white cap provide a clear visual centre. To her side, a dead hare rests upon a cloth, a common motif in Dutch still-life and genre painting that introduces a subtle contrast between the domestic activity and the hunt. A basket of apples sits in the foreground, demonstrating the artist's ability to render varied surfaces, from the smooth skin of the fruit to the woven texture of the basket. The lighting is soft, emanating from an unseen source to the left, which models the form of the woman and creates a sense of depth within the room.
Metsu was known for his versatility, moving between different subjects with ease. His work often displays a refined technique, with precise brushwork that defines the contours of his subjects without appearing overly rigid. This piece captures a fleeting moment of daily routine, elevated by the artist's attention to detail and his command of colour. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, punctuated by the bold red of the woman's garment, which draws the eye and balances the composition. This print offers a view into the domestic sphere of the seventeenth-century Netherlands, presented with the clarity and technical skill for which Metsu is recognised.
