A detailed 1553 engraving by German Renaissance artist Heinrich Aldegrever, depicting the biblical Annunciation with precise line work and traditional iconography.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1553, depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation. As a member of the group known as the Little Masters, Aldegrever was known for his technical precision and small-scale works. The composition follows traditional iconography, featuring the Archangel Gabriel on the left and the Virgin Mary on the right. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, descends towards Mary, surrounded by a radiant nimbus.
The artist employs a dense system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The drapery of the figures is rendered with heavy, angular folds, a characteristic feature of the German Renaissance style. In the background, a architectural structure is visible, providing a sense of depth to the interior setting. The artist's monogram, AG, appears in the upper right corner, a standard practice for printmakers of the period to denote authorship and protect their work from unauthorised copying.
Aldegrever was based in Soest and was heavily influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer. This influence is apparent in the attention to detail and the structured approach to the human figure. The print demonstrates the high level of skill required for metal engraving during the sixteenth century, where every line had to be carefully calculated before being cut into the copper plate. The work reflects the period's interest in combining religious narrative with the technical possibilities of the print medium, allowing such images to circulate widely among collectors and the public. The inclusion of the lily in the foreground serves as a traditional symbol of purity associated with the Virgin Mary, while the bed and domestic items ground the scene in a recognisable, if stylised, environment.
