A fifteenth-century Catalan diptych featuring the Annunciation and the Nativity, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This diptych by Jaume Ferrer the Younger represents the International Gothic style prevalent in Catalonia during the mid-fifteenth century. The work is divided into two distinct scenes: the Annunciation on the left and the Nativity on the right. Both panels utilise tempera and gold leaf, a technique common to the period, which provides a luminous quality to the backgrounds and the halos of the figures.
In the Annunciation, the Virgin Mary is depicted in a domestic interior, her dark blue mantle adorned with a repeating crown motif. The Archangel Gabriel stands opposite her, holding a scroll, while angels appear in the upper register. The spatial arrangement is flattened, typical of the era, prioritising symbolic clarity over realistic perspective. The floor tiles and the architectural elements provide a sense of order to the composition.
The Nativity panel shows the Holy Family within a rustic structure. The figures of Joseph and Mary are positioned around the infant Jesus, who lies in a woven cradle. The inclusion of the ox and the donkey, traditional elements of the Nativity, adds to the narrative detail. The use of gold leaf in the upper portions of both panels creates a decorative surface that unifies the two scenes. The figures possess a linear quality, with drapery folds rendered in a stylised manner. This work reflects the artistic conventions of the Catalan school, where religious narratives were presented with a focus on ornamental detail and devotional clarity. The preservation of the gold leaf and the application of pigment demonstrate the technical skill involved in creating such altarpiece components during the late medieval period.
