A Neoclassical history painting by Jacques-Louis David, depicting a tense moment between Achilles, Agamemnon, and the family of Iphigenia.
Jacques-Louis David painted The Anger of Achilles in 1819, during his period of exile in Brussels. The composition draws from Homeric tradition, specifically the narrative surrounding the sacrifice of Iphigenia. The scene captures a moment of tension between Achilles, Agamemnon, and Clytemnestra. David employs the precise draughtsmanship and clear, sculptural forms that define his Neoclassical approach. The figures are arranged with a theatrical clarity, reflecting the artist's training and his preference for moralising subjects drawn from antiquity.
Achilles is depicted in the foreground, his back turned to the viewer, wearing a helmet adorned with a large plume. His posture suggests a readiness for conflict. Opposite him, Agamemnon stands with a stern expression, draped in a red mantle that provides a strong colour contrast to the cooler tones of the surrounding figures. Between them, Clytemnestra and Iphigenia occupy the centre of the frame. Their expressions convey a sense of resignation and sorrow, contrasting with the masculine aggression of the two heroes. The lighting is controlled, focusing attention on the facial expressions and the textures of the drapery.
David uses a palette dominated by primary colours, particularly the deep red of Agamemnon's cloak and the blue of Achilles's garment. The background is kept relatively simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the psychological interaction between the protagonists. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex group compositions while maintaining a sense of order and balance. This work remains a representative example of the late Neoclassical style, where the focus on historical narrative and anatomical accuracy takes precedence over decorative flourishes. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Kimbell Art Museum.
