A 1770 engraving by Domenico Cunego after Gavin Hamilton, depicting the dramatic moment from the Iliad when Briseis is taken from Achilles.
This engraving by Domenico Cunego, dated 1770, reproduces a painting by the Scottish artist Gavin Hamilton. The scene depicts a moment from the Iliad, where Briseis is taken from Achilles by the heralds of Agamemnon. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical history painting, prioritising clarity, balanced figures, and a theatrical arrangement of the cast.
Achilles is seated on the left, his posture conveying his indignation and withdrawal from the conflict. In the centre, Briseis is led away, her expression one of resignation. The figures are dressed in classical drapery, and the setting includes a ship and military accoutrements that establish the context of the Trojan War. Cunego, a skilled printmaker based in Rome, utilised precise line work and varied hatching to translate the tonal qualities of Hamilton's original oil painting into a monochrome medium. The engraving captures the tension of the narrative through the gestures and gazes of the participants, reflecting the period's interest in classical literature and heroic themes.
This print was produced during a time when the reproduction of paintings through engraving was a primary method for disseminating art across Europe. The inscription at the base notes that the original painting was in the collection of Lord Viscount Palmerston, indicating the work's provenance within the British aristocracy. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of eighteenth-century Italian printmakers, who were highly sought after for their ability to interpret the works of contemporary painters. The clean lines and structured composition are characteristic of the Neoclassical aesthetic, which sought to emulate the order and gravity of antiquity.
