It depicts the Holy Family within the mouth of a dark, rocky cave, while two shepherds kneel in reverence before the infant Christ. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the shadowed, intimate interior of the grotto and the expansive, sunlit vista that stretches into the distance on the left. Giorgione employs a technique that balances human figures with the natural environment. The figures are rendered with soft, atmospheric modelling, a hallmark of the Venetian school.
