A classic sumizuri-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, capturing the dramatic energy of a kabuki actor in a demon role.
This woodblock print, executed in the sumizuri-e style, depicts the kabuki actor Yamanaka Heikuro I in a supernatural role. Torii Kiyonobu I, the founder of the Torii school, specialised in images of actors, a genre known as yakusha-e. The Torii school maintained a close association with the kabuki theatres of Edo, often producing promotional materials for performances.
The composition employs the 'tan-e' or 'sumizuri-e' technique, characterised by bold, black ink lines on paper. The artist uses a vigorous, calligraphic line to define the muscular form of the demon, capturing the exaggerated posture and facial expression typical of the aragoto (rough style) of acting. The figure grips a large staff, his body crouched in a dynamic pose that suggests movement and theatrical tension. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the actor's performance and costume details.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of early Ukiyo-e. His work reflects the energy of the urban culture in Edo, where kabuki was a popular form of entertainment. The print demonstrates the early development of the woodblock medium, where the clarity of the line work was the primary vehicle for expression. The lack of colour, common in prints from this period, emphasises the strength of the draughtsmanship and the graphic quality of the design. This piece provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku era, where the theatricality of the stage was translated into a portable, printed format for the public.
