A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, featuring the kabuki actor Tsutsui Kichijuro in a traditional role.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts the kabuki actor Tsutsui Kichijuro. Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, active during the early eighteenth century in Edo. His work often features actors in dramatic poses, reflecting the popularity of the theatre within the urban culture of the period.
The print employs the urushi-e technique, where black ink is thickened with glue to create a lacquer-like effect on the actor's robes. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned against a neutral background. The actor wears a wide-brimmed hat and carries two swords, suggesting a role as a samurai or a character of high status. The kimono pattern includes subtle motifs of rabbits and grasses, which add a decorative element to the lower portion of the garment.
As an example of early Ukiyo-e, the print demonstrates the transition from simple monochrome works to the more complex, hand-coloured prints that preceded the full-colour nishiki-e style. The line work is precise, defining the contours of the figure and the folds of the fabric with clarity. The colour palette is restricted, relying on earthy tones and the deep black of the robes to create visual contrast. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku and Kyoho eras, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of popular performers. The print serves as a record of the costume and performance style of the time, capturing the theatricality of the kabuki stage through a refined, graphic approach.
