A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, capturing the dramatic flair of kabuki actor Otani Hiroji I in his role as Asahina Saburo.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Otani Hiroji I in the role of the legendary warrior Asahina Saburo. Kiyonobu I was a founder of the Torii school, a lineage that maintained a close association with the kabuki theatres of Edo. The Torii style is characterised by bold, sweeping lines, often referred to as 'gourd-shaped' lines, which convey the exaggerated energy and physical presence of the actors on stage.
In this composition, the actor is shown with the stylised makeup and dramatic posture typical of the aragoto, or rough style, of acting. The figure carries a large fish, a common prop in kabuki performances, while a smaller figure looks upward in a gesture of deference. The print employs a limited palette, typical of early hand-coloured ukiyo-e works, where pigments were applied manually to the black-and-white ink impressions. The paper shows the natural ageing of centuries, providing a tactile quality to the surface.
The Torii school played a significant role in the development of the actor print genre. By documenting the specific performances and costumes of the era, these prints functioned as promotional material for the theatres. The emphasis remains on the theatricality of the subject, with the artist prioritising the expression of movement and character over anatomical accuracy. This work provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Genroku period, where the culture of the urban merchant class flourished alongside the popular theatre arts. The print is a representative example of the early, formative years of the ukiyo-e tradition, before the introduction of full-colour printing techniques transformed the medium later in the eighteenth century.
