A striking woodblock triptych by Toyohara Kunichika depicting the Kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV, known for its bold composition and detailed tattoo motifs.
This triptych by Toyohara Kunichika captures a dramatic moment from the Kabuki theatre, featuring the actor Nakamura Shikan IV in the role of Jinriki Tamigoro. Kunichika, a student of Kunisada, was known for his mastery of the actor print genre during the Meiji period. His work often reflects the heightened emotional states and exaggerated physicality characteristic of the stage.
The composition is divided into three panels, creating a wide, cinematic view of the scene. The figures are depicted with intense expressions, their bodies adorned with elaborate, full-body tattoos that were a common motif in depictions of heroic or rogue characters in Japanese popular culture. These tattoos, featuring dragons, eagles, and floral patterns, contrast with the stark, dark background, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figures. The use of colour is deliberate, with deep indigo tones providing a backdrop for the red and white accents of the clothing and skin.
Kunichika employs sharp, precise lines to define the musculature and the intricate details of the tattoos. The poses are dynamic, suggesting movement and conflict, which is typical of the 'musha-e' or warrior print tradition adapted for the stage. The inclusion of cartouches with Japanese calligraphy provides context for the performance, identifying the actors and the specific play. This print is a representative example of the late Ukiyo-e style, where the focus shifted towards more theatrical and bold representations of contemporary life and entertainment. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, with each colour layer applied to achieve the final, balanced image.
