This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Buncho depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Haruzo II. It originates from the series 'A Picture Book of Stage Fans' (Ehon butai ogi), a collaborative project published around 1770. The composition is constrained within the shape of a folding fan, a common format for ukiyo-e artists to experiment with unconventional framing.
Buncho was known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the specific features and mannerisms of performers during the mid-Edo period. Unlike the more stylised or exaggerated portrayals found in other schools, Buncho favoured a degree of realism in his characterisations. The subject is shown in a graceful pose, holding a small red saucer, with his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre tones for the background, which contrast with the deep purple and patterned red of the actor's kimono.
Technical precision is evident in the clean lines of the figure and the delicate rendering of the hair. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of illustrated books during this era.
