A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho, capturing the actor Ichikawa Danjuro V in a theatrical role from 1779.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro V in the role of the historical figure Ashikaga Takauji. The performance took place at the Nakamura Theater in Edo during the eleventh month of 1779, as part of the play Kaeribana Eiyu Taiheiki. Shunsho was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraits of kabuki actors. He moved away from the stylised, generic faces common in earlier prints, opting instead for realistic depictions that captured the specific features and expressions of individual performers.
The composition is minimalist, placing the actor against a plain background to draw attention to his posture and costume. Shunsho uses clean, calligraphic lines to define the folds of the kimono and the actor's facial structure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and subtle washes to provide depth without overwhelming the graphic quality of the print. The actor carries a large, woven basket, a prop that suggests his character's disguise or humble state within the narrative of the play.
Shunsho's influence on the development of actor prints was significant. He founded the Katsukawa school, which trained artists like Katsushika Hokusai. By focusing on the personality of the actor rather than just the character, Shunsho created a bridge between theatrical documentation and portraiture. This print serves as a record of a specific moment in eighteenth-century Japanese theatre, capturing the presence of one of the most famous actors of the Edo period. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where every line and colour block is carefully aligned to produce a clear, balanced image. It remains a fine example of the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the transient nature of the floating world is preserved through the medium of the printed page.
