A detailed engraving of Terpsichore, the Muse of dance, by the Dutch master Hendrick Goltzius. This work captures the technical precision of Northern Mannerist printmaking.
This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicts Terpsichore, the Muse of dance and choral song. As part of a series representing the nine Muses, the work demonstrates the technical precision for which Goltzius is known. The figure is seated, holding a lute, with a lyre resting on the ground beside her. Her posture and the arrangement of her drapery reflect the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, where elongated forms and complex folds are used to create a sense of movement and grace.
Goltzius was a master of the burin, and his ability to manipulate line weight allows him to define the texture of the fabric, the smooth skin of the Muse, and the wooden surface of the instrument. The cross-hatching techniques employed here create depth and volume, giving the figure a sculptural presence against the darkened background. The inclusion of Latin text at the base identifies the subject and provides a classical context for the image, aligning with the humanist interests of the period.
The composition balances the static nature of the seated figure with the implied sound of the lute and the rhythmic lines of the clothing. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, Goltzius achieves a high degree of realism in the rendering of the Muse. This print serves as an example of the sophisticated printmaking culture in the Netherlands during the late sixteenth century, where classical themes were reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary artistic skill.
