It depicts a specific location connected to the life and career of Ruan Yuan, a prominent scholar-official during the Qing Dynasty. The composition focuses on the natural elements of the site, specifically the gnarled, ancient trees that dominate the foreground. The artist employs a restrained palette, using ink washes and subtle earth tones to define the texture of the bark and the foliage.
