A 12th-century Chinese painting depicting the judicial proceedings of the afterlife, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This work is one of a series depicting the Ten Kings of Hell, a subject central to Buddhist and Taoist funerary practices during the Song Dynasty. Jin Chushi, a painter active in the late 12th century, produced this set of scrolls to illustrate the judicial processes of the afterlife. The composition follows a structured hierarchy, placing the presiding judge at a desk, surrounded by attendants and minor deities who record the deeds of the deceased.
The visual narrative focuses on the transition between life and judgement. A central figure, dressed in formal robes, reviews a ledger, while assistants present evidence. Below this scene, a demon figure with simian features brandishes a staff, overseeing the souls brought before the court. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on earth tones and faded pigments to convey the solemnity of the subject. The use of ink and colour on silk allows for fine detail in the facial expressions and the textures of the garments, despite the age of the material.
Historically, these scrolls were used in rituals to assist the dead in navigating the underworld. The iconography reflects the syncretic nature of Chinese religious thought, blending bureaucratic imagery with mythological figures. The figures are rendered with a focus on characterisation, distinguishing the judge from the supernatural entities that populate the lower registers. The work provides a window into the aesthetic and spiritual concerns of the period, demonstrating the technical skill required to balance complex narrative elements within a vertical format. The preservation of such works allows for an analysis of the stylistic conventions that defined religious art in 12th-century China, particularly the depiction of the afterlife as an extension of earthly administrative systems.
