A detailed 1857 stereoscopic photograph by Francis Frith documenting the ancient Temple of Kalabsha in Egypt.
This stereoscopic photograph captures the Temple of Kalabsha in Nubia, Egypt, as documented by Francis Frith during his second expedition to the region in the late 1850s. Frith, a pioneer in commercial travel photography, utilised the wet collodion process to record the ancient structures of the Nile Valley. The image displays the temple's colonnade, which exhibits the characteristic sandstone masonry of the Roman-era construction.
In the foreground, a figure stands amidst the debris of the site, providing a sense of scale against the massive stone blocks. The composition is typical of Frith's work, which sought to document archaeological sites with clarity and precision for a Victorian audience fascinated by the history of the Near East. The stereoscopic format, intended for viewing through a handheld device, creates a three-dimensional effect that was popular in the mid-nineteenth century.
Frith's documentation of Kalabsha is notable for its technical execution under the challenging conditions of the Egyptian climate. The heat often caused the collodion to dry prematurely, yet Frith managed to produce clear, detailed negatives that were later printed as albumen photographs. This print reflects the aesthetic of the period, where the focus remained on the physical reality of the ruins rather than romanticised interpretations. The inclusion of the photographer's signature and plate number, 316, is characteristic of his systematic approach to cataloguing his travels. This image remains a primary record of the site before its later relocation during the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
