A hand-coloured albumen print by Kusakabe Kimbei depicting the Zojoji Temple grounds in Shiba, Tokyo, during the late nineteenth century.
This hand-coloured albumen print captures the Zojoji Temple grounds in Shiba, Tokyo, during the late nineteenth century. Kusakabe Kimbei, a prominent figure in the Yokohama Shashin movement, produced this work for the growing tourist market. The image displays the meticulous application of watercolour pigments over a black-and-white photographic base, a technique common among Japanese photographers of the Meiji period to appeal to Western aesthetic preferences. The composition draws the eye toward the central stone staircase, which leads to the temple buildings. To the left, a series of stone lanterns stand in the courtyard, providing a sense of scale and historical weight. The surrounding foliage is rendered with soft, muted tones, typical of the hand-colouring process of the era. The architecture reflects the traditional wooden construction of the Edo and Meiji periods, with clean lines and balanced proportions. Kusakabe Kimbei operated a studio in Yokohama and was known for his technical skill in both photography and the subsequent colouring process. His work often documented Japanese sites, customs, and daily life for international visitors. This specific view of the Shiba temple complex offers a glimpse into the quiet, orderly atmosphere of the site before the urban expansion of the twentieth century. The print retains the original mount, which was standard for commercial photographic albums of the time. The soft palette and the deliberate framing of the temple entrance demonstrate the photographer's intent to present a serene, picturesque vision of Japan to a global audience. The image remains a valuable record of the architectural and environmental state of the Shiba district during a period of rapid modernisation.
