A detailed seventeenth-century etching of the Temple of Serapis ruins on the Quirinal Hill, capturing the architectural character of ancient Rome.
This etching, published by the Roman firm of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, depicts the ruins of the Temple of Serapis on the Quirinal Hill in Rome. The print captures the architectural decay of the site, focusing on the massive masonry walls and the remaining vertical structures that define the Roman skyline of the seventeenth century. The composition employs a clear, observational perspective, typical of the topographical studies produced by the de' Rossi family, who were central figures in the Roman print trade during the Baroque period.
The image presents a detailed view of the site, including the remnants of staircases and vaulted chambers. Small figures are placed in the foreground to provide a sense of scale, a common technique in architectural prints of the era to communicate the sheer size of the ancient ruins. The line work is precise, utilising cross-hatching to define the textures of weathered stone and the shadows cast by the crumbling walls. The sky is rendered with simple, horizontal lines, allowing the focus to remain on the structural geometry of the ruins.
Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi operated one of the most prolific printing houses in Rome, often collaborating with various engravers to document the city's antiquities. This work belongs to a broader tradition of Roman vedute, which served both as souvenirs for travellers on the Grand Tour and as records for scholars of classical architecture. The text inscribed at the base provides historical context, identifying the location and the specific ruins visible in the scene. The print offers a glimpse into how seventeenth-century observers perceived the physical remains of the Roman Empire, blending archaeological interest with the aesthetic conventions of the time.
