A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Salomon Gessner depicting the historic Tell's Chapel on the shores of Lake Lucerne.
This etching by the Swiss artist and poet Salomon Gessner depicts the Tellskapelle, or Tell's Chapel, situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The site holds historical significance in Swiss folklore as the location where William Tell is said to have escaped from the boat of the bailiff Gessler during a storm. Gessner, who was as well-known for his literary contributions as his visual art, approached this subject with the precision characteristic of eighteenth-century topographical printmaking.
The composition balances the architectural form of the chapel with the rugged, mountainous terrain of the Vierwaldstättersee. A small boat carrying several figures occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the towering rock faces. Gessner employs a delicate etching technique, using fine, hatched lines to define the textures of the water, the foliage, and the craggy cliffs. The sky is rendered with subtle, horizontal strokes that suggest a calm atmosphere, contrasting with the verticality of the chapel spire and the steep incline of the mountain.
As a practitioner of the Enlightenment, Gessner often sought to capture the harmony between human structures and the natural world. This print reflects the period's interest in documenting specific geographical locations associated with national identity and historical narrative. The work is marked with a '1' in the upper left corner, suggesting it was part of a larger series or portfolio documenting Swiss sites. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of elements demonstrate Gessner's technical proficiency in the medium of etching, a craft he pursued alongside his writing career. This print offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth century, where topographical accuracy met a refined, classical sensibility.
